Project 19-54 Communication standards for the Australian rail network

The communications systems in use on the Australian rail network are primarily voice-based and vary from state to state and between urban and rural locations. Many of these are closed systems resulting in high cost infrastructure, particularly for long haul operators who have to install and maintain expensive equipment for each of the systems they traverse. Transportation communications requirements are steadily evolving and include a movement towards communications based train control. ,

The primary objective of this project was to identify and address the security issues for the use of a standardised communications infrastructure capable of meeting the needs of the various stakeholders while addressing the safety and security requirements of rail control applications. This project did not proceed due to changing industry needs.

Results to Date:

  • Workshop held to discuss issues of secure communication with industry and to finalise the project scope.
  • PhD thesis on “Secure Rail Communications in Heterogenous IP Networks” to be submitted in 2006.

Project Leader: Dr Mark Looi (Queensland University of Technology)
