This project commenced in 2006 and aims to develop projections for
employment, skills and training in the Australian rail industry.
Specifically, the project aims to:
- develop a profile of the Australian rail industry, including
current employee numbers, by competency group, age, probable
retirement age, trends in non-retirement exits and geographic
location
- develop estimates of future demand for the railway workforce
- estimate trend scenarios in future total demand in relation to
retirement and non-retirement exits, to provide estimates of net
demand by competency groups and related training needs
- estimate the future required ‘pipeline’ including
training and recruitment needs by time and location
- estimate future requirements for training system capacity,
particularly in relation to implications for demand for accredited
training professions and relevant training agencies.
The project is being undertaken by PATREC (Planning and Transport
Research Centre) at Curtin University of Technology in Western
Australia and is expected for completion in January 2007.
Results to date:
- Commenced literature review and analysis of Census data
- Commenced industry phone interviews and data collection through
mail pro-forma
- Preliminary projections of rail workforce commenced.
Future outcomes:
- Project Report: Report on Rail Industry Skills Requirements, System
Capacity and Issues Affecting Skill Supply
