Postgraduate Qualifications for Rail Operations Managers
RAIL operation managers can fast-track their career path with
postgraduate courses developed by Rail CRC and delivered in
distance-delivery mode by Central Queensland University.
Project manager Associate Professor Ken Kwong, Central Queensland
University, said the three-year Master of Rail Operations
Management Degree programme offered multiple exit points.
“Students may exit with a Graduate Certificate after
successfully completing the first three courses. They may also exit
with a Graduate Diploma after successfully completing the first six
courses,” Assoc Prof Kwong said.
“The final stage of the programme comprises of individual or
collaborative research/investigation projects.”
The program structure will be as follows:
Year 1 – Graduate Certificate in Rail Operations Management
Introduction to Rail Operations Management
Rail Infrastructures
Network and localised Train Control
Year 2 – Graduate Diploma of Rail Operations Management
Train Planning
Passenger and Freight Operations
Rail Operations Risk Management and Administration
Year 3 – Master of Rail Operations Management
Rail Operations Management Project Definition and Planning
Rail Operations Management Project Implementation 1
Rail Operations Management Project Implementation 2
The course development project was initiated in response to strong
demand from the rail industry to address the problem of a shortage
of qualified rail operation managers.
Course development work has been strongly supported by Rail CRC
industry partners, who have seconded key staff to serve as project
officers for this project.
The content of the courses are directed by a project steering
committee comprising of representatives from Rail CRC partner
organisations and is chaired by RailCorp
Deputy Group General Manager, Service Delivery General Manager
Operations, Kevin Wright.
Assoc Prof Kwong said the program was designed to complement
existing graduate development programmes currently in place within
the rail organisations, and offered a structured career development
pathway for new recruits in the area of Rail Operations Management.
“We have tailored the course to compliment work-place
learning practices, where students are supported by an industry
mentor,” Assoc Prof Kwong said.
“For acceptance into the programme, students must be employed
within the rail industry sector and have employer support.”
