Enrol now for Sem 2 in Postgraduate Rolling Stock Courses
RAIL Engineers can boost their career paths with a
distance-learning Graduate Certificate of Rolling Stock Engineering
developed by Rail CRC and delivered by distance education from the
University of Wollongong with semester 2 enrollments open now.
The Rolling Stock Engineering course is planned to extend into a
Master of Rolling Stock Engineering Degree in 2008.
University of Wollongong Senior Lecturer and course project leader
Dr Richard Dwight, said the Rolling Stock Engineering course
offered rail engineers an efficient jump-start into the
rollingstock field.
Dr Dwight said there was a current shortage of expertise in this
field as more and more rollingstock engineers retired, and younger
engineers were not taking up the knowledge.
“This course is unique and with 800 engineers working as
rollingstock engineers around the country, demand is expected to be
high,” Dr Dwight said.
“The rail industry has forecast a shortage of rolling stock
engineers and this course will assist in developing expertise in
this area.
“It is designed to turn engineering graduates into proficient
rollingstock engineers within the two to three year course (for the
Masters Degree), compared to the six to seven years of on-the-job
training which would be required to gain equivalent knowledge and
experience.”
Rail CRC commenced the development of this course in conjunction
with the University of Wollongong and many railway industry
professionals in recognition of the expertise shortfall.
The Rollingstock Engineering Graduate Certificate project is one of
approximately 40 Rail CRC research projects, which were established
and supported under the Australian Government’s Cooperative
Research Centres Programme.
Rail CRC is based at Central Queensland University’s
Rockhampton campus and consists of rail industry partners –
Queensland Rail, TMG Rail Technology, ARTC, Pacific National, and
Rail Corp - and six university partners – The University of
Wollongong, University of South Australia, Central Queensland
University, Monash University, Queensland University of Technology
and The University of Queensland.
