ScheduleMiser (Train Plans on Demand (TPOD))

Michael Mullan 20050176 ScheduleMiser

The TPOD system automatically generates thousands of potential trains plans on demand.

Traditionally train plans are created by drawing train paths one at a time on a train graph, either manually or assisted by computer software – a task often taking many weeks to create a feasible train plan. Even once the train plan is complete, changes in demand and network operating conditions as the day of operation approaches necessitate changes to the train plan. As such, train planners spend much of their time trying to maintain a feasible timetable, rather than an optimum timetable.

Rail CRC, in collaboration with industry partners, have developed a real-time dynamic rescheduling system software – TPOD – which can keep the network running smoothly by generating good train plans instantly, on demand. With the software, train planners can specify a train departure and arrival time and train plans and graphs will be automatically generated for review. On the day of operation, when necessary, the system can be used to revise the network operating plan to recover – in an optimal way – from disruptions to the planned schedule.

Developed by leading researchers at University of South Australia, TPOD is designed to allow flexible implementations, including integration with crew rostering, integration with track maintenance, dynamic rescheduling and network performance. For example, TPOD can be utilised by operators to assist negotiations in relation to maintenance scheduling and crew rostering, in that a number of alternative train plans can be developed on demand to determine the optimum solution.

Significant industry testing of the product has occurred, with further testing being undertaken by Rail CRC throughout 2006 with a number of its industry participants to determine its suitability and performance in the field and to further enhance the product. It is anticipated the prototype system would need specific customisation to suit the individual needs of each rail operator.

The benefits of the product for industry include:

  • Reduced delays and increased reliability, enhanced reputation and ultimately, the generation of more business
  • Creation of capacity within a network (that did not appear to be there)
  • Lower maintenance costs, through more efficient scheduling (a proportion of maintenance is dead time, when maintenance crews are traveling or are on site but not doing productive work.
  • Enhanced ability to improve the design of the network (e.g. location of passing loops) and
  • An agreed basis on which track owners and rail operators ca negotiate ‘possession’ issue. This is becoming increasingly important where track owners and rail operators are different organizations.
The project was independently evaluated by STEM Partnerships in 2006, and the technology was estimated to have the potential to deliver a risk-free-value of $36.8 million over 15 years to the rail industry, and taking into account risks associated with delivering the technology, and expected value of $31.9 million. Rail Innovation Australia will work with TMG Rail Technology to facilitate commercialisation of ScheduleMiser in Australia and overseas.
